Global Mobility Heads to Africa

A team of seating specialists from Global Mobility will fit 400 wheelchairs in two African countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Kenya, beginning Monday August 25.

The team includes Ilse Caballeros, a physical therapist from Antigua, Guatemala who has been to Kenya several times for seating clinics and who has worked closely with Global Mobility in her native country.

Occupational therapist Madison Gartman, from Mississippi, is also on the team. She has been living in Guatemala in recent months and working with Hope Haven, our partner there.

Ilse and Madison will arrive in the Congo on August 25 and will work all week in the city of Nyankunde, about 90 minutes from Bunia. The seating clinic will distribute 200 chairs at CME Nyankunde Hospital.

Swahili and French are the languages of the Congo, though we are told some medical professionals there speak some English.

Ilse and Madison depart for Kenya by way of Nairobi on Saturday August 30 and will fit 200 wheelchairs in four different clinics there, including Kajaido, Eldoret, and Joytown. The team returns home September 8.

We’ll post further information as it comes in. Thanks for your continued support. DR
